We are Temple Ohev Shalom, the only Jewish congregation in New Tampa. We were established in May 1998 by local families seeking a Jewish presence in our community. As we grow along with the neighborhood, we seek to maintain both our close family feeling and our service to local families.

Who are these families?
Reflecting the diversity of our communities, our membership includes persons from Orthodox, Conservative and Reform backgrounds, along with those who have converted to Judaism and interfaith families wishing to bring a Jewish identity to their home. Because of this diversity, our congregation has taken an "unaffiliated" course and not joined any of the established Jewish sects, (Orthodox, Conservative or Reform). This allows us flexibility in mixing Hebrew and English in our services, recognizing children as Jewish through their father and mother's lineage, and giving women an equal role in the Temple. Still, we retain many of the rituals associated  with traditional Judaism such as the use of Tallit, Kippah and Kashrut  in synagogue affairs.

Our congregation has made great strides in the last seven years. We have completed the first phase of our temple in Tampa Palms to house our services, Hebrew School and social events. This 3500-square-foot building sits on four acres, with space and plans for future expansion. The structure has a "great room" providing space for social events, Hebrew school and worship. There is also a kitchen and daycare room on site. Our congregation is extremely proud of this building, the only Jewish facility in New Tampa.
